One of the drivers of the #28 Belgian Audi Club Team WRT R8 driving in the second round of the Blancpain GT Series in Monza will be Antonia Garcia. It will be the first Blancpain GT Series race for the 35-year-old Spaniard. That might sound strange, since Garcia is one of the reference drivers in the world of GT racing, but in recent seasons his focus lay with his American programme with Corvette.
"True, apart from the Le Mans 24 Hours I haven't been racing in Europe since 2009", Garcia smiles. "That is why the phone call from the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT was a bit unexpected. It is nice to see that my experience is appreciated. When the best team in a championship calls you, it’s easy to say ‘yes’, and I am delighted to join them for three races. For me, it’s a wonderful opportunity to race again in Europe and to discover such a competitive series as the Blancpain GT Series. I have briefly tested the Audi R8 LMS at Silverstone, mainly to familiarize myself with the car, the controls and the tyres. That should make adaptation quicker when I’ll take to the track at Monza, and I know I can count on the team’s support for the set-up and strategy work in this first race. I am very much looking forward to this."
