- Froggatt renounces points from season opener to share success with long-time co-driver
- Hui's absence from Monza round considered force majeure
- Fellow competitors and SRO Sporting Board approve decision to amend final standings
Sky Tempesta Racing drivers Christopher Froggatt and Jonathan Hui will share the 2021 Endurance Cup Pro-Am title after a change to the final classification was approved by their fellow competitors and the SRO Sporting Board.
Froggatt has chosen to renounce the points he scored at Monza, the only event at which he did not share the #93 Ferrari with long-time teammate Hui. Though scheduled to contest the full campaign with Sky Tempesta Racing, the Hong Kong-based driver was unable to compete at the Italian venue due to last-minute Covid-19 travel restrictions. In his absence, the team finished seventh in class.
Hui undertook the remainder of the Endurance Cup campaign, making a significant personal sacrifice to race across Europe despite facing mandatory quarantines upon returning to Hong Kong. His comeback saw the #93 Ferrari take class victory at the Circuit Paul Ricard 1000kms, while further strong results followed at the TotalEnergies 24 Hours of Spa, the Nürburgring and Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya.
Sky Tempesta Racing clinched the Endurance Cup Pro-Am teams' title at the Spanish venue, while Froggatt was crowned drivers' champion and Hui was classified second. Froggatt has therefore taken the opportunity to renounce his score from Monza, bringing him level with Hui on 95 points and allowing the duo to share the championship success.
Given the changing nature of travel restrictions at the time of the Italian event, Hui's absence is considered to have been a case of force majeure. The decision has the approval of all full-season Endurance Cup teams competing in the Pro-Am class and has also been ratified by the SRO Sporting Board.
As a further consequence, Barwell Motorsport drivers Miguel Ramos and Henrique Chaves move up to second in the standings, while Orange1 FFF Racing duo Hiroshi Hamaguchi and Phil Keen are classified third. As the Endurance Cup is primarily intended for driver crews competing together throughout the season, the final standings more closely match the spirit of the series.
Notably, Hui becomes the first Hong Kong-born driver to clinch a Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS title in any class. With the exception of this year's trip to Monza, he has been an ever-present member of the Sky Tempesta Racing squad’s Endurance Cup programme since the team made a race-winning debut in 2019.
