The TotalEnergies 24 Hours of Spa didn’t go according to plan for up-and-coming British-Korean racer Jack Aitken, after he was involved in accident during the first hour of the race that left him in hospital with relatively minor injuries.
Jack’s Lamborghini Huracan run by Emil Frey racing was part of a multiple car incident at the top of Raidillon: one of the fastest parts of the epic seven-kilometre Belgian circuit. The race remained under a full course yellow while four drivers were taken to the medical centre, with Jack sustaining a broken collarbone, a fractured vertebra (which is stable), and a very small lung contusion.
Jack is now looking forward to heading home shortly to recover and getting back in the car as soon as possible.
He said: “First of all, thank you to everyone who has supported me over the last several hours, from the marshals, medical staff trackside and at the hospital, my wonderful team, fellow drivers and all of you sending messages. All things considered I feel fine, and quite lucky. I’m also sorry for my team mates that we didn’t get to compete, and for the other cars involved. The aim now is to get back to the UK and start to recover as best as possible and be back in the car soon. I’m sure with the people around me I’ll manage it just fine!”
Before the accident, Jack and the Emil Frey Lamborghini team had got off to a strong start: Jack qualified the car P11 out of a 58-car field in Super Pole but was at one point looking at a front-row start before having his time disallowed for infringing track limits. Having started the race for the team, he was running just outside the top 10 when the accident happened – but is now more determined than ever to conquer the Spa 24 Hours next year.
