This weekend we're rewinding to 2011 for the FIA GT1 World Championship season finale at the incredible Potrero de los Funes circuit in Argentina.
Though it took place less than a decade ago the event has already gained legendary status among race fans. That's partly thanks to the incredible array of GT1 machinery that was on display, which included the Corvette C6.R, Aston Martin DBR9, Lamborghini Murcielago, Nissan GTR and Ford GT.
The drivers were pretty special, too: Markus Winkelhock, David Brabham, Lucas Luhr and Richard Westbrook were just some of the established stars on the grid, while emerging GT talents like Maxime Martin, Yelmer Buurman and Christopher Haase added youth to an impressive field.
But what makes this event truly special is the circuit. Set in the volcanic hills above the city of San Luis, Potrero de los Funes is among the most visually impressive venues in modern motor racing. Its 6.2km layout winds a course around a vast man-made lake, taking in expansive views of the surrounding hills.
The drivers loved it, too, with the circuit's elevation changes and high-speed corners providing a real test for the monstrous GT1 machines. The trip to San Luis concluded a 10-round global tour that had previously made stops in the Middle East, Europe and Asia, with the drivers' and teams’ championships both going down to the wire in the Argentine mountains.
The weekend's one-hour main race will be broadcast in full on Sunday afternoon (24 May), giving fans the chance to enjoy the action from start to finish. Coverage gets underway at 14:00 CET on the GT World YouTube channel, Facebook (GT World Challenge Europe, Intercontinental GT Challenge, SRO Motorsports Group) and the GT World Challenge Europe website.
