Reigning Sprint champion Laurens Vanthoor set the quickest lap of the second free practice session at Brands Hatch, the scene of the second round of the 2014 Blancpain Sprint Series. At the wheel of the #1 Belgian Audi Club Team WRT Audi the Belgian clocked the fastest time of both free practice sessions, in 1’24.918.
Vanthoor set his time twelve minutes into the one-hour session, limiting his running afterwards. That gave the competition the opportunity to almost match the Audi’s time. Eventually Andrea Montermini, at the wheel of the #90 Scuderia Villorba Corse Ferrari already third during Free Practice 1, came to within 43 thousandths of Vanthoor’s time.
The Belgian’s teammate René Rast, at the wheel of the #2 Belgian Audi Club Team WRT Audi, left it to five minutes before the end of the session to set the third quickest time, less than two tenths slower than Vanthoor. Thus Rast edged in front of the Lamborghini of Tomas Enge and Jeroen Bleekemolen.
In Silver Cup, Mateusz Lisowski and Vincent Abril in the #4 Belgian Audi Club Team WRT Audi left it very late to finish in front of the #34 ROAL Motorsport BMW of Italian youngsters Stefano Colombo and David Fumanelli. The quickest car in Pro-Am was the #27 Grasser Racing Team Lamborghini of Sascha Halek and Stefan Landmann, despite a spectacular slide through the run-off at Graham Hill Bend.
Qualifying for the second round of the Blancpain Sprint Series starts at 17.30.
